Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives that exist to serve the financial needs of their members (who are also owners) and offer the same types of banking products and services you would find at other financial institutions, including savings and checking accounts, loans, mortgages, Internet home banking and bill payment, and more.
A volunteer board of directors, elected by the members, governs a credit union. With their vote, each member has a direct impact on the direction of the credit union.
Also, “People Helping People” is the credit union philosophy. The credit union operates to promote the financial well-being of their members.

A credit union is a not-for-profit profit financial cooperative. It is member-owned and controlled through a board of directors elected by the membership. The board serves on a volunteer basis and establishes and revises policies, sets dividend and loan rates, and directs certain operations. OHecu has adhered to the philosophy of ‘People helping People’ and supports the seven cooperative principles These principles are an integral part of OHecu. We maintain these principles in all aspects of our business initiatives.
Voluntary Membership
- Credit Unions are voluntary, cooperative organizations, offering services to people willing to accept the responsibilities and benefits of membership. The board of directors consists of unpaid volunteers elected by the membership.
Democratic Member Control
- Credit Unions are democratic organizations owned and controlled by its members, one member one vote, with equal opportunity for participation.
Members’ Economic Participation
- Members are the owners; they contribute to, and democratically control, the capital of Credit Unions. This benefits members in proportion to their transactions with Credit Unions rather than on their capital invested.
Autonomy and Independence
- Credit Unions are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by its membership.
Education, Training and Information
- Credit Unions provide education and training to members so they’ll benefit from, and contribute effectively to, the development of credit unions.
Cooperation Among Cooperatives
- Credit Unions serve their members most effectively and strengthen the credit union’s cooperative movement by working together with other credit unions directly through local, state, regional, and national structures.
Concern for Community
- Credit Unions focus on more than just members’ needs, they also work for the sustainable development of communities, including people of modest means, through policies developed and accepted by the members.
The philosophy of “people helping people” sets credit unions apart from other for-profit financial institutions. Credit unions are dynamic full-service financial institutions that easily compare to banks in the types of products and services they offer, but differ drastically in how they deliver these products and services. Credit union members receive the outstanding value and service they deserve.
Credit unions are non-profit and exist to help people, not to make a profit for stockholders. A volunteer board of directors, elected by the members, governs a credit union. With their vote, each member has an equal vote and with that can have a direct impact on the direction of the credit union. As our Mission Statement indicates, we are committed to assisting and educating our members in establishing and enhancing their financial well-being.

This depends on when you meet the minimum requirements for a package.
For example:
When your opening of a new loan increases your aggregate balance above a specific package threshold requirement, the membership representative will update your Package Level at that time and you will immediately begin to receive the associated benefits.
Another Example:
If you have direct deposit of your payroll or retirement money, and your aggregate account balance just reached the Silver Package level, you would automatically start to receive Silver Package Benefits the month after OHecu completes the monthly update of all package members.

Most financial institutions are owned by stockholders, who own a part of the institution and intend on making money from their investment. A credit union doesn’t operate in that manner. Rather, each credit union member owns one “share” of the organization. The user of credit union services is also an owner, and is even entitled to vote on important issues, such as the election of member representatives to serve on the board of directors.
